Fresh food prescriptions given to low-income patients to help combat disease

What if instead of prescribing a medicine to treat a disease, doctors could prescribe fresh food to help prevent one? Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania is testing a food prescription idea with their Fresh Food Pharmacy, a service targeted right now at food insecure, diabetic patients. Physicians think giving out food could actually save them money in the long run, and other doctors think the program is a sign of a paradigm shift from reactive to preventative medicine.
